>guess i'll bite at this bait
Actually it's a amphibious assault ship, designed to ferry a good amount of expeditionary ground troops (marines), to a region near a coast. It's aircraft compliment is limited to helicopters and V/STOL, but the marines are planed on decommissioning the old as fuck harrier in 2015 but it got extended indefintely until the F-35 becomes operational... which looks like never. Same reason why standard F/A-18 hornets got extended to 2025's and the super hornet into the 2030's.

also, the one in your picture is 25 years old. It's service life should be only for 10-15 more years at which point, it will be like milking a dying cow until the utters bleed and it falls over and dies

you're actually thinking of either of the LCS variants which have been a disaster. During the first 1000 days of operational testing, 650+ equipment failures were reported.

thats like saying for every 3 days, 2 of those days something fails.

one of these LCS's were conducting sea trials or some testing shit a while back and they intercepted a drug carrying shit instead of waiting for the coast guard and i shit you not. the engines failed right then and there. The ships movement was uncontrollable just a few hundred yards away from a potential enemy vessel.

those need to be canceled and scraped asap. They also cost 3x as much as they were sold to congress for. like they were sold for mid 200's but now for some bull shit reason cost mid 700's of millions per unit and increasing every year.

as for the zumwalt pictured, it's actually performed decently well although its been super hush hush since many of it's systems are experimental. Like the admiral incharge of the entire surface fleet wants the next one built with the rail gun system we've been developing for the past 10 years. he legit wants to skip the testing experimental phase and go straight to operational. srs.

Americans have always been fucking atrocious at ASW

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Happy_Time

>The British recommended that merchant ships should avoid obvious standard routings wherever possible; navigational markers, lighthouses, and other aids to the enemy should be removed, and a strict coastal blackout be enforced. In addition, any available air and sea forces should perform daylight patrols to restrict the U-boats' flexibility.
>None of the recommendations were followed for several months. Coastal shipping continued to sail along marked routes and burn normal navigation lights. Boardwalk communities ashore were only 'requested' to 'consider' turning their illuminations off on 18 December 1941, but not in the cities; they did not want to offend the tourism, recreation and business sectors.[2] :p186 On 12 January 1942, Admiral Andrews was warned that "three or four U-boats" were about to commence operations against coastal shipping (in fact there were three),[2]:p212 but he refused to institute a convoy system on the grounds that this would only provide the U-boats with more targets.
>When U-123 sank the 9,500-ton Norwegian tanker Norness within sight of Long Island in the early hours of 14 January, no warships were dispatched to investigate, allowing the U-123 to sink the 6,700 ton British tanker Coimbra off Sandy Hook on the following night before proceeding south towards New Jersey. By this time there were 13 destroyers idle in New York Harbor, yet none were employed to deal with the immediate threat, and over the following nights U-123 was presented with a succession of easy targets, most of them burning navigation lamps. At times, U-123 was operating in coastal waters that were so shallow that they barely allowed it to conceal itself, let alone evade a depth charge attack.

The United States already has 20 aircraft carriers in service right now. Ten of those are Nimitz class carriers. One of those is the state-of-the-art Ford class. There are four Ford class carriers being built with another five planned for construction. In total, the United States will have around 30 carriers in service. China has one carrier. The country with the second most carriers is France with four carriers. If you added up the size of all four French carriers you would end up with a single carrier that is 20% smaller than just one Nimitz class carrier, and the U.S. has ten Nimitz in service.

Can't tell if OP is a Britbong shitposter or just a Britbong sperglord. OP's pic is of the USS Essex, classified as an amphibious assault ship and not an aircraft carrier.

>Behold, a pair of Nimitz-class carriers.

too bad you forgot to galvanize it; causing it to cost quadruple what it was supposed to. You could have had 4x those for the same price if your military industrial complex wasn't so corrupt. On that note; what the fuck is going on with the F-35s?
>>
>>70310636
to be honest, the destruction of our battleships was the best thing to happen to the US navy and military. It forced us to become reliant on using aircraft carriers
>Which actually is far superior, just look at PH attack, i doubt it would have been more effective if the japanese decided to use their surface battleship fleet instead of planes
furthermore, we conquered the pacific and all those little islands through superior air power.

Battleships have become increasing more irrelevant when you have air superiority, anti-ship missiles and mines. The three biggest threats to a surface vessel. although with the introduction of the new railgun increasing the effective combat range ten fold does open up the concept of "boat-tillery" which surface ships have been designed to over look since ww2.

Ramps are for cucked navies.

1# Ski ramps add additional weights to the bow of the ship and cut airflow over the deck.
2# Aircraft are highly limited in take off weight with Ski ramps
3# Aircraft need more deck space to get up the speed which increases launch time between fighters.
4# Can't launch and land aircraft at the same time.
5# Can't launch aircraft fast enough in an emergency. A US carrier can launch a fighter every 15 seconds.
6# Aircraft has to use considerable more fuel and more stress on the engines in order to guarantee the plane gets up to speed. A catapult can airborne a plane without any engine power.

And here is a big one!

7# Can't launch aircraft during even medium rough seas, winds or bad weather with ski ramps during combat conditions. Catapults can keep a fighter on a direct straight line path by keeping it locked to the deck.during launch.

Most of the problems with Catapults are being reduced with the phasing out of steam systems for electromagnetic.

http://www.breitbart.com/tech/2016/02/16/member-of-german-left-youth-party-apologizes-to-refugees-on-facebook-after-alleged-sexual-assault-by-migrant/

>DARPA today is holding a christening ceremony for the technology demonstration vessel it has designed, developed and built through the Agency’s Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) program. Taking place in Portland, Oregon, the event marks several recent successes in a program that seeks to develop an entirely new class of ocean-going vessel—one able to traverse thousands of kilometers over the open seas for months at a time, all without a single crew member aboard while still remaining under human supervision at all times.

RATO are placebo that require modernizing plane so it can use them. Not only that, most of the time they are just a extra weight for aircraft after takeoff and take space on pylons for the extra armament you could put in. Also they function like a droptank because they are useless while airborne so might as well dump them into sea and that is another extra cost.
So yeah.

if your ship cant leave it's port it aint active service.

the victory hasnt sailed since the 1820's, while the constitution has always been an active duty vessel.
