Let's look at this "directed" concept.
Is choosing a reproductive partner because of genes not also "directed" choice of genes?
If I choose a partner because her eye genes and skin color genes will match up well with mine to create a certain outcome. That is not "directed".
How can anything humans do be more or less directed? As long as humans decide what to fuck or how to reproduce it will be just as "directed" as doing it a different way that might just be more effective.

My guess is it doesn't matter who gets it unless the engineering tweaks with lifespan, at least from a nationalistic standpoint like the Chinese might have. Most of the criticisms of genetic engineering point out how it will lead to a massive increase in unexpected problems. Such as schizophrenia or insanity.
