Uhh, no it wasn't. Great Britain had done so thirty years before, ending slavery in its colonies (slavery had never been practiced in the motherland). It was policing it's colonies, it's rivals in Europe and subjugating the international slave trade run out of and by pirates, Africans and the French all across the world decades before America decided to outlaw it.
