How could Cruz actually win? He can't win NY and he has a poor standing in NE states, so he'll have to get extremely lucky to even clinch the 1237. He will be mathematically incapable of winning after the April 26 primaries, so he should drop out because he said a brokered convention is the worst thing you could do in any situation. If he doesn't drop and continue to steal delegates, what makes anyone think they would prefer him over an establishment member like Jeb or Rubio?

Cruz needs 80-90% of remaining delegates, which isn't happening unless Trump drops out. Cruz would probably win a brokered convention though.

Why would he win in a brokered convention? Once Trump is out, they no longer need Cruz. If they're going to give the nomination to a guy who is not in first place, why not just give it to the best establishment puppet they can find? Why bother with Cruz? Trump supporters are going to bolt the party either way, so they might as well go for broke and nominate Paul Ryan or something.
They're okay with losing the general anyway, and they already think it's lost. They just want to protect their down ticket and monopoly of power now.

After the first vote, tons of delegates are unbound, and Cruz is working behind the scenes to secure their loyalty. After the second vote, even more delegates are unbound.
The GOP would be shooting itself in the foot by inserting someone else in the race.

Because if they didn't block the appointment, it would help Trump and Cruz, who would say "See?! They don't fight for you, but I will!" making it harder to stop one of them from reaching a majority of delegates.

You're missing the point. They shoot themselves in the foot anyway if they nominate anybody but the guy with the most votes. Plain and simple. Trump supporters will walk if Trump goes into the convention with the most votes, most delegates, most states, and leaves with nothing. The lucky guy who is selected won't matter. It's corruption no matter who they choose, and choosing Cruz isn't going to make the blow any softer. Nobody is going to say, "well, they stole it and fucked us over and ignored our votes, but at least they gave it to the second place guy." Nobody is going to say that. So why not pick the guy that they can actually manipulate to control their brand message?
