Have you read many of these books? Have you?
Most monographs consist of people presenting their view by ignoring certain pieces of evidence to make their narrative.
Is this necessarily "bad"? No. Sometimes thesw narratives can allow us to see things from vastly different perspective.
The problem is when everyone cheery picks their evidence and interprets it in a certain way so we demolish any debate. Everything comes from debate. It is how we reach any semblance of consensus.
When debate stops then things become simplified. E.g. history is that of the oppressors and oppressed. It makes for a good hook. It sells books. People don't have to debate it when all their books agree!
But if you look at the detail of something like colonialism then you find an intricate and complex web of ideas. Some of these so called "oppressed" people worked the system to combat their enemies and keep in their own societal structures which the colonial "oppressors" did not understand. Instantly something is more complex beyond x did y for z reason.
History and historical actors is not just based on a few market forces. You can't read Lenin's Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism and suddenly know all there is to know when each subject is much more complex.

Here I did some calculations for you. One of my more recent reads was The Death and Lide of the Great American School System. There are 242 pages. each line has about 10 words. there are 42 lines per page, but some lines are shorter since they are the end of a paragraoh, and you also have New Chapter pages, so 38 lines per page. So that's 91960 words. It took me about 3 night to read it. This is only 510WPM.
