if you read the books that go beyond the movies that kinda happens. They rebel against the Empire because they see it as an oppressive regime, then establish the New Republic that quickly becomes as bureaucratically fucked as the old one. obviously that isn't canon anymore but I bet they're influenced at least a little bit by the EU.
