We really do need to make a distinction between Anglos and Germanics. Anyways, the first actual invasion by the Romans was quite successful. There was never a big effort to take Scotland because it was very mountainous and they preferred good agriculture land which was in England. Wales is similar except not as out of the way as Scotland was, so there was a bigger effort to take it, plus it had some needed minerals.
