I disagree with people saying Wales couldn't last on it's own. We give PLENTY of energy and water to England for free which conveniently goes under the radar of GNP/GVA calculations all the time. I'm quite confident that the >5% per capita wealth shortfall (adjusted for cost of living) between us here and the rest of the UK could be easily made up by selling our energy and water to other countries if we were independent (we generate twice as much energy as we use).
The question of whether we could is quite simply an easy yes, we are in a position now where a healthy mix of industrial and more white collar business gives us a lot of stability and makes us prone to investment.
The question whether we want to or not is different though, we are happy in the union.
Also important to point out that I'm not sure it would be feasible for us to be independent and outside the EU, even if we didn't like the union, it would be a choice between that union or the UK, and anyone in their right mind would chose the UK.
