I haven't traveled a whole lot, but I have used public transit in Chicago and Denver.
Chicago is dirty and cluttered, but expansive. The L will take you anywhere. I know ridesharing doesn't count, but there is ALWAYS a lyft or uber driver within a minute of you. For a mega city, it's doing alright.
Denver is pretty clean, and the lite rail is neat and growing. They use busses more than anything. It's a city full of stoner hippies, so you bet that they care about pollution and infrastructure. I think Denver is taking real careful steps forward before committing to a shitty transit system
