Historically Turkey has been anti-Europe. Together with the Islamic world it has been the "other" culturally, socially and politically, to use a leftist term. And it will remain so as long as they're Muslim.
The notion that "Islam is part of Europe" is akin to saying Mongolian shamanism is part of Europe, just because Russia was repeatedly and thoroughly pillaged and raped, and there are still quite a few shamanistic Tatars to be found there.
If Turks completely abandoned Islam and secularized, they could be as "European" as, say, (the Greek part of) Cyprus; so somewhat; an outlier at the outer fringes of Western civilization. This happening is unlikely for Turks as a whole, but it has happened, and continues to happen for individual Turks. From personal observation, this seems to be more likely to happen, the more "European" a Turk looks; but very unlikely for the more Anatolian looking type. As if it there was something like a genetic memory from when some of them were in fact part of the Christian world.
