So what do my fellow Europeans think about the idea of a united Europe?
In the future, small nations will be even more squashed as superpowers strengthen their grip. Unless we want to fade to obscurity after thousands of years of dominance, we have to be united in some way.
How do we do this without it ending up like the current EU? If it's done right (with kebab removal too), we could make this the greatest continent on earth again.

Step1.: Unite politically
That's a tough one already and really the first hurdle a European Nation would need to take to have any sustainable longeviety. My reservations to that step are that it is very (!) hard to unite two people (not to speak of 7+) if there is no ovious common Idea of Identity to the people involved.
Circumstances that would ease such a process are a common percieved danger to us all (IS works fine as of now - but our politicians are not about uniting, they are about having their cut of the cake) or any ideology which would succesfully rebalance wealth and supercede the former state. (none that i would know, which is anywhere near sustainable)
Step 2: Unite militarily and internally (read: security measures - domestic politics)
This one assumes step 1 has been successfully enacted.
As a united nation we would need to have common security interests, foreign and domestic. Though - call me crazy - i put domestic higher in importance than foreign. These would have to be exectued by a security force consisting of all participating (former) nations. No more national fragmentation / fragmentation by people.
This is where it gets tough for Europe because there are just too many languages spoke inside the national border. (which causes quite some trouble as it is today, for what i care) So it really comes down to a healthy communication between every deparment of the new formed security force.
Step 3: Stand united in foreign relations \ present a consistent picture of the nation towards others
This is all diplomacy and that's where the whole dissolving bullshit starts. We would need to take a stance on tough topics, ensure that our interest is represented in the most efficient way. This again, I think, would lead to some sort of imperialistic policies, which then again eat up the state piece by piece over time. The less we are able to defend our external interest the less we would be able to sustain inner stability.

As a Spaniard (only studying in America for a year), I'd be in favour of such a union; there would be one monarch—effectively a modern cæsar—and kings, sovereign princes, grand dukes and so on. It would have a thoroughly European character; the EU, in spite of its name, wishes to dilute Europe's character under the banner of diversity.
