They need to be severely curtailed and fair use/personal copying expanded. The right to be the sole entity allowed to sell the copyrighted work should be about the only functional protection, and the current durations should be reduced. I'm not sure Stallman's plan is a long enough time, but it definitely shouldn't be more than ~30 years. The protections should also more greatly favor single creators, and offer less copyright time for corporate entities that merely own IP that they hire others to make.
