What would be one's motivation of undergoing training to become something like a truck driver or dental assistant, when you can just flip burgers at Burger King for $15 an hour?
>>
Maybe because you want to drive a truck.

Maybe we'll all have to start considering what we want to do with our lives.
>>
>>70204841
1. The idea that you don't want to flip burgers for a living. It's not just a "muh pride" thing the job kind of sucks and some people hate it.
2. There's only so many burger flipping jobs. Someone has to clean our teeth and deliver the burgers.
3. You'd probably still make more money truck driving and being a dentist/orthodontist, just not double or triple.
>>
$15 an hour is for pussies. They should be campaigning for $15,000 an hour

Raising minimum wage not only increase inflation, but it also gets the most uneducated and unskilled people further away from finding work.
If companies have to pay $15 to burger flippers, they'll start asking their burger flippers to have degrees and previous experience. People without those will be unable to find any job at all.
Socialists are such geniuses.

I know I sound like carl the cuck here but does it really need an in depth explanation?

A lot of employers will be forced to pay a lot of their employees more, so they will raise prices on things to compensate negating any increase in purchasing power for minimum wage workers.

If you don't think that happens when the minimum wage gets increased you are fucking delusional.

Supporting a $15/hr minimum wage is beyond retarded and shows a complete lack of the ability to think critically.
>>
>>70205609
Why hire four average people to run a McDonalds at 15/hr when you could just hire two highly skilled people to do the same work? You couldn't get those skilled people in the first place at the previous minimum wage, so why continue hiring retards when you're being forced to pay your employees a skilled worker wage anyway?

Higher paying jobs demand a better resume, because they (in general) demand better work results. Skilled people will take an easy job at 15/hr.

Motivation has little to do with it, judging from your (lack of) argumentative skills some people (you) can't really pick which job they get.
>>
because 15/hr will basically become the new 7.25/hr in a few years
>>
>>70204841
The real issue is people already stuck on wages below $15 an hour. Many can barely scrape by and need to work a lot more to get by. You can't skill up if you're working ridiculous hours.

A nation with people in poverty when they don't have to be is wasting its potential.

To paraphrase for the yanks, one of the martyrs of the Easter Rising in Ireland:

America without her people is nothing to me, and the man who is bubbling over with love and enthusiasm for ‘America’, and can yet pass unmoved through our streets and witness all the wrong and the suffering, the shame and the degradation wrought upon the people of America, aye, wrought by Americans upon Americans, without burning to end it, is, in my opinion, a fraud and a liar in his heart, no matter how he loves that combination of chemical elements which he is pleased to call ‘America’.

This is one of the myriad of issues that people fail to see in a $15 minimum wage. Tykwan and Shameeka won't be getting hired anywhere, because there will now be highly qualified people applying for those jobs.

It will also force every employer in the country to raise the wages of all their workers by 50-100%. Somebody working the graveyard shift as a warehouse manager for $18/hour isn't going to keep that job when he can go fold clothes at the Gap for a few bucks less and work normal hours with no hard labor.

Every local small business in the country will also go under or lay off half their staff. If you own a small pizza shop with three employees who make $10/hour, it would cost you $30,000 out of pocket every year to keep them.

It's such a shitty idea that it can easily be shot down by doing simple calculations. It's astounding that so many people are for it.

>What was the minimum wage in 1950 and what does that equate to in today's dollars?
Just in case you're too lazy or stupid to look it up...

The minimum wage in 1950 was only
.75c / hr. Today that is equivalent to $7.50/hr. Pretty much the same. In essensce, the minimum wage has not increased since 1950 yet prices have gone up much faster than inflation so the actual BUYING POWER of minimum wage has DECREASED.

In other words, people can not buy as much with minimum wage today as they used to. They are effectively making LESS money than a burger flipper in 1950.

However, corporate profits have skyrocketed and pre-employee productivity has increased exponentially. If wages had kept up with productivity (you know, that thing employees do that makes money) the minimum wage would be closers to $25/hr

lets not forget that lots of people are going to lose their jobs in the first place and automation will immediately seem more attractive. The U.S gov did studies to this effect, Gov. Brown in cali said it was bad for the economy just a few days ago.

However, the minimum wage increase does benefit big box stores like walmart as they get a higher skilled workforce to choose from intially and are better able to handle the financial hit then most small businesses and shops which are their competitors.
I wonder why Walmart openly stated they were bringing jobs to america and raising the minimum wage for their workers last year?
>>
>>70204841
The price of everything will rise with the wage. Along with illegal immigrants or willing to work for a fraction of that, the worker will either barely be getting by on $15, all the while complaining the wage should be $20 an hour or unemployed

This.

We have a minimum wage of 8,50€ per hour in Germany now. During my university years (management and economics), I worked for almost half of that per hour (5€ per hour). And guess what? I was fine, coupled with student loans (which aren't enough to sustain most people, google Bafög). I didn't live in luxury, yes, but that's not the point of working your way through university. I had enough money to pay for rent, utilities, food and the occasional beer. Flipping burgers, sweeping streats, stacking shelves aren't careers, they're economic stepstones you finance your actual learning with.

And if minimum wage was closer to 25 dollars an hour there'd be more unemployment and more expensive products.

Remember; a lot of our issues are due to illegal immigration. Why would I suddenly payraise my 8.25 dollars an hour employee to 25 dollars an hour when I can just hire five illegal mexicans for 5 dollars an hour.
>>
Liberals are desperate to get some sort of inflation going in the economy so the Fed can begin to normalize rates. "Not had a pay raise in 10 years". Yeah, well not had a productivity increase in 15.

OP you are right. I am a truck driver. I have used this very point against $15/hour supporters I talk to. At $15/hour 35 hours a week 50 weeks a year it adds up to a few thousand less than I make in a year. I work in average 60+hours a week and am home 2 nights a week. If I could make about the same income working 2/3 the hours and sleeping in my own bed every night at a job that's much less stressful I would and I imagine many other drivers would. Which will only make the driver shortage worse.

I feel like a bigger contributing factor is how success in business is measured.

For instance, if you run a business that creates $1000000 profit per year every year then you are considered a failure.

In today's business world you are only a success if you show increasing profits year after year after year...there is NEVER a point at which you can say "as long as we keep making this much we're good" because the first time you don't increase your annual profit investors will sell your stock faster than a pimp sells pussy.

Presumably, if people are in such dire need of a $15 minimum wage, they won't be spending the extra money they earn on $20 pizzas and $7 Big Macs.

It's also not as simple as 'just raise the prices on everything'. People will pay $7 for a sub at a local pizza shop because it's a much better option than Subway for a couple bucks extra. If the price of a sub at the locally owned place goes up to $10 or $12, nobody is going to eat there anymore, because they can go get a sub at the mega corporation for half the price.

I worked at a small pizza shop in high school, and it was hard for them to stay afloat while paying us $8. I ended up quitting when I graduated though, because WORKING AT A SUB SHOP ISN'T A FUCKING CAREER.
>>
>>70204841
It used to be that a man could pump gas his entire life and still be able to attain common goals such as home ownership and the occasional vacation.

You need to stop thinking of $15 dollars an hour as a lot of money. Especially for folks that have to live and work in cities with insane real estate values.

I live in Vancouver and I am tied to the coast with my career. My condo is three bedrooms and half a million dollars. I'm fortunate enough to be able to buy a million dollar home, if I have to, in four hours.

The vast majority of people will not make enough to make ends meet here, let alone prosper.

This is a side dish of globalism and is only going to get worse.
>>
>>70208639

>not realizing the general public can afford more expensive pizzas because they now earn more

>implying i won't still eat cheap microwaveable frozen food

I'm not gonna start buying expensive shit if i make $15/hour. I'll just be able to pay the rent on my studio apartment as well as my health insurance & bills without having an anxiety attack. My standard of living will remain unchanged.
>>
>>70209685
>Presumably, if people are in such dire need of a $15 minimum wage, they won't be spending the extra money they earn on $20 pizzas and $7 Big Macs.

You've summed up the point: people AREN'T in dire need of $15/hr. Minimum-wage workers aren't starving or living on the streets. They spend their money on plenty of dumb, unnecessary bullshit just like all Americans ($5 Starbucks drinks, smart phones, jewelry, expensive clothes and shoes).

The simple truth is that they want to be able to buy MORE dumb bullshit. Or worse, some of them unrealistically believe they are entitled to raise a family in exchange for unskilled labor that even a child could do. They want maximum benefits for minimum efforts.
>>
>>70210067

So move out of the city, Leaf.
>>
>>70209685
Don't forget this will encourage business to hire Illegals who will work for much less encouraging MORE illegal immigration
>>
>>70204841
Transportation is just as easily automated as food preparation, anon.

Anyway, the problem isn't the minimum wage, it's just that there aren't enough jobs to give every unskilled person three so they can make bills. Donald Trump wants to reverse globalization and bring jobs back to the US, and he's the only candidate in the field who recognizes the problem: the reason we're always broke is because we constantly ship our high-profit wealth generating unskilled manufacturing and low skill technical jobs overseas. The reason China is still a functional economy with a slave-tier minimum wage is because everyone who wants a job can work.

>>
>>70209320
They are desperate now and yet there is still a shortage. What a lot of companies do is offer free training and license to get new people in the industry. Many of those people don't make it through training and of those that do a large portion are out in their first year. Either because they are bad at the job, crash into shit or don't like the lifestyle. If companies wanted quality drivers they could get them now. But they're not because they don't want them. It's a profit game. Companies are being subsidized by the government for everyone they hire. And if they can make more money paying people less they will. Also a lot of people driving now are eastern yuro trash and other shit tier foreigners who will work for peanuts and send money home.
>>
>>70210176
No...they want the SAME buying power that minimum wage used to have. People 50 years ago doing the same unskilled labor (bagging groceries, flipping burgers, washing cars, etc...) had MORE buying power. Thier minimum wage had more actual value.

Minimum wage workers today don't want more they want the SAME.

I don't actually live in Vancouver, but the suburb of Coquitlam. The entire region is densely packed and housing prices get worse the further west you go.

I'm capable of buying a million dollar home, but I'll probably take my family to Maple Ridge... Most of the working poor can't handle it, because the commute for carless plebs could take hours on a bad day.

The biggest problem with the minimum wage is predatory real estate speculation. The cost of housing eats up more than two thirds of the median wage here.

I don't have a problem, combined income in my household is $160k... But that doesn't go as far as it should because $560 a week goes to the mortgage.

I'm a longshoreman, so I have to stay near the city for work. I can't just leave, not that I'm complaining though.

I'll be happy with a $12 or $15 minimum wage.

$8.10/hr here in Ohio is kinda BS. I can pay for my own hourly wage within 2 minutes of working. Employers are only saying they can't afford a minimum wage increase because they designed their businesses around the idea that cheap slave labor will be there forever.

These businesses are universally awful, never provide further advancement, and are barely meeting health standards all the time. They are the corporate franchises that allow zero creativity. They are the shitty mom and pops that everyone for some reason idolizes. They are the places that will fire you just to hire somebody else that wants to get paid minimum.

Every single business that can't afford a $15 minimum wage RIGHT NOW is already gone. They just haven't realized it yet.

The reason is simple :

If $7/hr cost increase on a few employees is enough to kill your business, then ANYTHING was going to destroy it the millisecond an unexpected cost happens and you deserve it.

It's not astounding at all, we live in an era where adults think like children and use the same logic.

Hedonism is the death of mankind. It dulls the mind and makes men act like women. Hedonistic values allow degeneracy to breed and our bodies to get fat. Society is a failure with a dead end.

prove it show m the rate of inflation next to the minimum wage rate over time
>>
>>70210562

You're throwing around the term "buying power" as if there were no major differences between the 1950's economy and the 2010's economy. The technological advancements alone give a modern person far more "buying power" than someone 65 years ago ever had.

But still, you're talking out your ass. For one thing, 1950's dudes who bagged groceries weren't living in comfortable houses with white picket-fences. They lived in apartments, like their modern-day counterparts. Labor, skilled and unskilled, was more in demand because the population was far smaller, but minimum-wage workers couldn't afford middle-class lifestyles like you seem to think they did. Factory workers got higher salaries because they stayed with the company for 40 years and received gradual raises. Nobody bussed tables and bought a home with their earnings.

Gee, that would be tough though wouldn't it anon? You'd have to be smart enough to come up with a good or service that was valuable to the public. You'd have to make a business plan for investors. You'd have to run that business and keep it out of debt, while paying interest to your investors.

For what jobs would this $15 law be applied? Extreme situation: 12 year old kid restocks shelves in a local supermarket. Does he get $15 per hour?
>>
>>70211419

Once again, what about the business that pay higher wages in order to get more qualified employees?

They're already paying double the minimum wage which supplies them with decent employees. Clearly they haven't decided to be cheap skates and just hire migrants.

Their employees went through hard training to get these jobs.

Oh shit. Billy doesn't want to be a pipe fitter and welder anymore? John won't be a car mechanic? Steve won't manage his mom and pop store?

You mean now he can get the same pay for just sitting around and making coffee? Maybe mopping a floor somewhere?

Wow that would be so much easier, they all think. And I might be able to get a job closer to home, so I don't have to travel to my "high paying" job that I trained so hard for.

We should all just quit!

Don't Worry guys, only businesses that pay minimum wage will be affected by a pay increase....

Sit in the Australian sun all day every day for a month until your skin looks like old boot leather.

Then smuggle yourself into a shipping container that is bound for any European country, it doesn't matter what one. I wouldn't recommend trying to sail there like other migrants due to the significantly greater distance you have to travel and the fact your waters are filled with countless species of sea life that wish to murder you.

Once you get to your new location proceed to strike up a conversation with the nearest law enforcer.

By virtue of being descended from violent criminals and other assorted refuse of my country, nobody will be able to understand a single word you say and will assume you are talking in sand people tongue.

If they do seem suspicious however feel free to rape a few of the local women, this should clear any doubts from their mind about your authenticity.

Success! As a recognized refugee you now get to live a lavish lifestyle funded for by taxpayers. If you are still short of cash feel free to use the magic word of racism for diplomatic immunity while mugging locals for their belongings or while making use of the many free to use prostitutes in these countries (any woman that cannot outrun you).

Yes, $15 would be the minimum hourly rate for pretty much every job in the country.

I bagged groceries for $6.25/hour when I was 14. Now we'll have 14 year olds making $15/hour. 8th graders will be making a $30,000 per year wage. Let that sink in.

What's the reason for $15/hr? Is that what it takes to live, or is that what it takes to live plus buy an iphone? Did they just make this number up?

Combination of automation and inflation driving large portions of the unskilled workforce into unemployment while ensuring those still employed don't enjoy full benefit of the increase. Basically Truck Drivers and other skilled workers will still be proportionally paid more than unskilled workers, most unskilled workers will have their jobs replaced by machines and those who remain will be making little more in terms of true value than those today courtesy of inflationary effects driving prices up.

We could easily be replaced by machines, which I'm sure will happen if minimum wage goes up. I don't expect the retards who make a """" career """" out of fast food (like the ones you see protesting and asking for the $15) to understand, which is why they work there.

Automation is coming no matter what. If you're going to be replaced at 15 an hour, you will be replaced at 7.50 an hour.
>>
>>70218114
Don't tell /pol/ that, they seriously believe that businesses would rather pay humans $7.50 an hour than machines $0.00 an hour. Businesses are fine paying that $7.50 forever for no reason, it's only when you increase the worker's wage's beyond that they suddenly would rather not pay more than they need to.
>>
>>70216721 this so much this

I've worked in hotel business for 15 years. The average person I hired started 9-$12 an hour. Actually there are computers that can do this job and they are already there. People just dont like them so much; kind of like the self check out. I happened to work at a more upscale chain but there is always one self service computer there lurking. It doesn't get much use except for when the people are busy. However I am hiring people with university degrees who speak multiple languages for $9-12 an hour. So you bet your ass when minimum wage goes to $15 its just going to be computers and a manager who works unlimited amount of hours a week for $35K.
