The idea is that you _are_ your ancestors, they form a big part of your identity. This also ties in with the concept of honor (which I think Varg also talks about somewhere) which was understood to be kind of a metaphysical "force" almost, which carries onto your children too. These things also vary depending on the specific kind of paganism (Norse, Celtic, Roman, etc) but since pretty much all European pagan religions stem from Indo-European religion, they have a lot in common.
