Can someone tell me what is so controversial about Trump saying that if abortion was illegal, people who have abortions should be punished?
If you're not going to punish someone for doing something illegal, what is the point of it being illegal?
Because feels. It would offend too many women and it's not a political winner. Logically it makes 100% sense which is why he said yes.
You're right. If they made it illegal just for doctors to do it, then women would do it themselves. And then they become the person doing the illegal act and deserving punishment anyway, except now with no medical supervision.

This is why women shouldn't vote
they don't want any consequences for any of their actions

So now when you have unprotected sex with a woman, it's illegal to have an abortion, and you will HAVE to pay for 18 years of child support
Also to add, the controversy from the Republican side is different.
Because Trump chose the logical response instead of the standard pro-life politicized response, it shows that he never actually researched his position and instead just thought of his answer on the spot.
It's evidence that he doesn't actually care about being pro-life and is probably just saying he is in order to be able to run as a Republican.

It's controversial because it's not a stance on the issue, nor does it provide any insight into trump's motivations.
It's vacuous dodging so the media is going to pressure him to answer. They want an alterior motive to the non-answer but the truth is probably trump hasn't decided how much he needs to pander to independents
More importantly, why do so women care so much about abortion when only a small, small minority of the population will ever have one?

He as asked a trick question. He gave the only correct answer after noting at the time that it was badly posed.
Should sanctions exist for breaking laws or not? If not, then why have laws?

Trump doesn't care about abortion, he just says he does to win votes. That's why he didn't know the correct pro-life response. His answer exposed him as a pandering fraud ala Shillary. Stay in denial.

See Latin America. It's a very fuzzy situation, there are women imprisoned for miscarriages because every early-ended pregnancy is investigated by the police, who conveniently are Catholic and think she's literally Satan by default.
That and there'd be no way to enforce actual illegal abortions, how would you ever even know if the woman never tells anybody they're pregnant?
The practical focus for enforcement is though the doctors who can perform the operation.

This. Women should be tied up and raped.
