I don't get it. If the majority of people who vote republican in America are voting for Trump, why the fuck wouldn't he get the republican nomination or just become president straight up? Why are American politics so gay and retarded?

The primaries select the people who run in the general election that decides the president.

Really not a hard concept.

Because the primaries aren't technically the election. Basically two parties hold mock votes to see who is the most electable, participants agree not to run independent after if they lose so it does not split votes. Good on paper, in reality its a broken system.

If we had a bracket voting system it would fix the fuck up that is the voting system.

Yeah but why do they need to reach 1237 or whatever it is delegates instead of just getting the highest number?
>>
>>70181241
Our country is 200 years old, and while our system is perfect for that time period, it's shitty in this day and age with current technology. But our country fears change like it fears less fat.

The primaries decide on who will run for president under each party.
The party chooses, according to their own set of rules, which candidate to select at the end of the primaries.

According to the Republican rules if no one gets over a magic number of delegates then they decide who to nominate.

If Trump doesn't get this number then they will most likely pick Kasich as their nomination.

It's just a really old relic from back when the party conventions would often choose between numerous different people to run in the general election.

Obviously, contested conventions rarely happen anymore because most people drop out when it's obvious they won't win, unlike kasich and his soros golds.

>1237
it's not an arbitrary number, it's 50% of the delegates + 1, a majority
>>
>>70181566
Because of situations exactly like this, where Trump has a solid 30-40% of the party on board, but the other half ranges from ambivalent, to outright loathes. You can argue them being blinded by the media and misled and shit, but the fact remains that you don't want someone who can only invigorate less than 50% of your target electorate in the general election. You risk the majority of the voters either staying at home, or even voting against your guy.
>>
>>70181566
it's just for the party's endorsement, even if donald doesn't get the 1237 he could still run.

it's just that it would likely split the conservative vote and give it to the sandman or hill dawg

Primaries
>let the people "choose" who they "want" for the general

>>70181566
In a perfect world, yes. You can reason if somebody can't get 50% of the party votes, how can they do in the general election. Reality is that it is a good way for them to keep out people they don't want.
They screw Trump, he fucks them by going independent. They hardly gave him a fair run
>>
>>70181241
A primary election is basically each party's internal election to decide who will be their candidate for whatever office. The number 1237 is 50%+1 of delegates. Whoever gets that should get the nomination, but the party leadership could always choose whoever they want if they like political suicide. If Trump gets 1237 the GOP is ethically obligated to give him the nom, even if they don't want to.

This is all unrelated to the general election, where the President is actually decided. These are the playoffs, leading up to the championship tournament between the final two candidates.

With all due respect, "Reply Here" is a very vague term and it could easily be understood to mean the thread, not the specific post.

That is a legitimate vote and a legitimate victory for Trump in Virginia!

>>70181566
It's not a democracy but a representative republic Delegates are the representative at the convention and if there is no clear majority then they debate and delegate.
