The political views people identify with say a lot about them. How they'll manage finances, how they will rear children and how they will contribute to society. If someone leans left and the other right, the tension will eventually snap in twain. Your view on politics bleeds into everything else you do, whether you believe it or not.
I'm glad my significant other and I share the same political views. It would otherwise be impossible for us to be compatible. We're both very straight-laced folk, and we have a judgemental fixation on society. There is no compromise or in between with either of us. Our values are the same, but we are still our own individuals. I tried being with a "free spirit", which was another term for a person who is a lazy gibsbedat.

I was pretty centrist, voted for Obama in 2012 (my first election), but my husband was a staunch conservative when we met in college. We've been together since and just had our first kid back in October; I've drifted pretty far to the right since then largely becauae of him, cant see myself voting democrat under any circumstance in this election.
Moral of the story is that you can always influence someone's political leanings while dating them. Don't worry about dating someone much different than you politically. In fact, you may find that you prefer dating people much less similar to you.
