I see where your coming from, but I've really only seen that happen with kids that get beat by their parents all the time (abusive parents). The last (only) time I was smacked was when I told my parents to shut up when I was like 12, which I fully deserved and knew it. My parents were also smacked when they did stupid shit, and never really became violent. I believe that both compassion and discipline are necessary for raising a child, unless you're raising either a future snowflake or a kid who doesn't go out of line, since he wouldn't need discipline.
