There was a switch during the 60s because of this, starting with Goldwater and who purposely pandered to disaffected southern democrats who were not liking the fact that democratic candidates were opening up to civil rights for blacks.

He doesn't have to lift a finger to win their vote. 2012 comes around, his support among white men slips, he goes and panders to the gays to make up for it. There was at least some disparity until 1964, Goldwater campaign. After '64 all hope was lost in ever getting the black vote.
It's easier to increase 20-40% up to maybe 50% which is equal split compared to trying to increase from 5-10% lol..
Its a notable change that took place during the 60's that really divided the parties along racial lines.

This proves my point, going back to the 40's there was at least a sizable chunk of blacks who didn't. Compare to now. The black vote isn't worth fighting over for either party. They vote overwhelmingly democrat no matter what. Democrats don't need to pander hard to them, and Republicans will barely even bother.
The cities in which they live are overwhelmingly poor, dilapidated, low economic opportunity, and high crime. All run by democrats.
