It's not. Liberals use it as a debate tactic to restrict your argument. Essentially they attempt to soften your point by detaching illegal immigrants from the criminal aspect of their nature. They also portray you in a negative light by claiming you are racist for describing illegal immigrants as criminals.
Basically they can't argue with the fact that illegal immigrants are criminals by nature, so they instead try to cover up the fact with emotional manipulation.
