Jackets were always longer before the 2000's reaching the knuckles when your hands were at your side typically, the styles in the 1920's were usually really tailored and the 1930's had the very exaggerated shoulders. The big problem is they wear edgy fingerless gloves and matrix coats with their obviously cheap hats or their suits are really badly made.
There's a reason the poor wore caps, hats were usually made of fur, rabbit fur being the most common. Most men had one nice hat they wore everyday, modern cheaply constructed hats look awful in comparison and that's why they never look right. A hat usually looks out of place unless you have a suit on except for a few rare cases. Suits aren't worn everyday now though so often the very small details that would have been obvious in the past get overlooked these days, the worst offender in my opinion is arm holes are cut too low or the shoulders are way too heavily padded.

I was just showing an example of how a hat can still look decent if the whole outfit is decent, a suit and fedora, bowler whatever it is are historical clothing.
