Student loans are not legitimate loans and should be discharged as usurious instruments.

It isn't that education should be free: Bernie faggots are wrong on this. Whoever is bearing the cost of education should be entitled to a legitimate return on that investment.

For example, if I study a technical discipline, those paying for my time are entitled to a return on that (e.g., a percentage of my production for x amount of time.) This means of course that lending for education would be carefully underwritten. Simply going to college because would not happen and 'vibrant diversity' would not exist as these types are likely to not succeed at the discipline they would supposedly study. And critically, bogus degrees like Wymyn's Discharge, Homo-Erotic, etc. would be open only to those paying cash (or directly funded by Soros et. al.)

Basically, the less reliable to student and less tangible the degree, the less likely any loan would be extended in the first place. For qualified students, the lender would have a right to a piece of the production for a time. So again, while the current system is predatory, Bernie fags are wrong.

1400 loan, 615 rent (just a room,) 35 phone bill. I spend 75 bucks a week on food and whatever, and everything else goes into savings. I have 7k as an emergency fund in savings.....

College education = job is the scam that people fall for, that's the problem. That's why they take courses and study for things that in many cases don't have promising prospects for jobs with salaries high enough to pay off the loan they took.
>>
>>70159769
It is simple. You borrow money and pay it back. She should have known the terms of the loan before signing. It is nobody's fault but hers.
>>

They gave her the fucking money and she spent it.

Schools rarely promise jobs, only that they'll help in the search. More over, any teen with common sense should be able to tell that a womyn's studies or ethnic studies degree is garbage that has no place is a productive world. The people who lied to these kids are primarily themselves.

I have a shitty $40k/yr office job, but whenever I wake up in the morning, I'm grateful that I have no loans except the $22.00 credit card debt from last week when I ate at McDonald's with a few friends.

I was so depressed after high school because the only college I could get into were shitty private schools offering $15,000+ in loans every year. My parents couldn't afford it, so I took a $28,000/year office job. I'm at $40,000/year now at 23-years-old, and many of my classmates who graduated college all make significantly less than I do. They also have tens of thousands in debt.
>>
Do these people not know what financial aid is? College is already almost completely free if you're poor so wtf?
>>
>>70157709
It's a completely unsecured loan where the borrower doesn't have to pay anything for 4 or more years.

If it wasn't for the high interest rates, nobody would lend money for student loans.
>>
>>70160467

you pay back more when you take 23 years you dumb fuck. If she'd made more aggressive payments she wouldn't be in this mess. My credit card rate is like 9%. If I spend $1k in a month, and I get the statement, the minimum payment is less than $12, and at that rate it would take decades to pay off and it would be a lot more than $1000. That's why you shouldn't carry a balance.
>>
>>70158136

Well if you look at it as an investment it makes sense. Borrow if you have to but be frugal and take as little as possible, work your ass off in school, have a plan after you graduate and good job prospects lined up.

Go to community college for two years in state. It's dirt fucking cheap and you can pay for it CASH with a part time job at Starbucks. Get your associates and get an entry level job after that. Finish your degree in evenings and weekends at a State School and pay cash again. It's fucking cheap too. Live at home for the next four years.

This is what non-rich kids COULD DO, but don't, because they want the 'college experience' and because their parents are stupid fucking retards who can't control their children.

Oh and that college experience amounts to shitloads of degenerate fucking, drugs, and alcohol, nothing more.

This is exactly what I did. I had zero college debt. It took me 5.5 years years to get my degree and by the time I was done I had 3.5 years of work experience at age 23. By age 24 I was making 80k a year and debt free.

I fell for the STEM meme too. I make about 97k a year in a mid-tier city, own a house cash, and drive a fucking new Camaro I also paid cash for.

White people and their parents behave like niggers when it comes to school.

ITT People not understanding how to calculate NPV. Assuming she has paid back in identical installments over the last 23 years, she has paid a total of 17,300 in 1993 dollars at a 5% discount rate.

She has paid back less than she has borrowed. The amount she still owes is $45,000, or $27,000 in 1993 dollars.

This means the total "price" of borrowing $26,400 is $44,000 (in 1993 dollars). Take away the capital she received and the loan cost her $18,000 and the fun of going to college for 6 years or whatever she did.

If her total earnings were increased by an amount equal to this loan of $18,000 and the lost wages she would have made as a college dropout for 6 years ($70,000 in 1993 dollars) she has made a profit on this loan, even with the 45k outstanding.

So this lady needed to increase her lifetime earnings by $100k to make college worth it.

The average college grad makes about a million dollars more than the average high school grad over the course of their lifetime (present value ofc). If she only made 100k extra, she is exactly the type of person who should not go to college. Actually, I take that back. If she made 100k extra, she should do whichever made her happier as the cost would be the same.

>>
>>70159822

A middle-aged adult in an industry designed to take advantage of "new" adults making some of their first "independent" financial decisions of their life doesn't sound quite even handed.

The artificial need for a bachelors degree has been forced on the country by shaming non-college grads as stupid, by forcing any real grasp of information technology to college, and by the complex set of fucked up decisions that have led to making a HS diploma worthless, lest we hurt a teen's feelings.

Then you have banks salivating at this situation, with the "just sign here" mentality, knowing that the lendees cannot escape it not matter what. Ancillary to this are the colleges themselves, who also see the whole endeavor as a money grab. EVERYTHING is about money in college education. The books, the tuition, the meal plans, the parking, everything. Pell grant caps go up $2,000? Wow, look, tuition just went up $2,000.

Banks, colleges, and government have confluently fucked students over. So yeah, I'm not going to defend every individual with a shit loan situation, but don't pretend you live in some Libertarian porn where all actors are rational and completely informed, and on a level playing field.

I hate Bernie and free college is an ignorant meme.

But I will not defend the student loan scam.

* Interest and fees should have a cap, both per month and total for the life of the loan. (It's setup like a scam and it's wrong to expect 18yo kids to understand the implications.)

* Bankruptcy protection should be restored to all lenders.

* In the event a court discharges all or part of a student loan, the lender should be able to sue the school for recovery of half the costs.

* In the event that the student can prove that they diligently looked for work and were unable to find any related to their degree for two years after graduation, then:
** Full discharge in bankruptcy court.
** Lender can sue the school for recovery of the entire amount.

Side effect: only serious schools offering real degrees with job placement assistance would survive. All the liberal studies bullshit that poisons America would burn to the ground. People like Carl the Cuck could no longer protest because they would be too busy working at McDonald's for minimum wage.
