One of the things many westerners admire is how early, quickly, almost uniquely Japan went from being backwater rice farmers to a modern economy and world power status while other countries had to be dragged kicking an screaming into the 20th (or 19th) century and others haven't made it there yet and even show signs of regressing.
This can be true even if they find prewar Japanese society and the Empire "problematic".

It's the imagry that you people surround yourselves in that attracts people to you. Everything from your cartoons, to your wood reliefs, and temples is what I believe primarily attracts people to your culture.
But I think the inherent flaw for people who worship your culture is that they're in love with the image you guys project, not the reality of your culture. People watch anime and they see a "perfected" school culture with exaggerated characters. What they don't cover, is that you're in school for 8+ hours a day, doing chores, and participating in clubs that aren't at all exciting to their animated counter part.
I guess what I'm saying here, is that you guys are great at portraying an image of your culture that others want to emulate, but have no clue of the inherent downsides. It might look fun to be a Japanese Salaryman, but most people don't recognize that you have a 70+ hour workweek. It might seem fun to go out to do karaoke with your friends, but you're only doing it, after you've just gotten off a 14 hour shift, with your boss who insists that you go with him, spend half the night out drinking, only to get 6 hours sleep, and repeat it all again the next day. Japan is really good at portraying ideal escapism imagery. It's because of this very reason that I like your culture, but I don't obsess over it, because I know the reality isn't nearly as great as it is portrayed.
