Circumcision is an ancient custom originating as best we can determine in east Africa. It was a fairly common practice in Egypt from ancient times.
The Jews altered it, however. Most others that practice male circumcision practice it as a right of passage for young adults. Infant circumcision is a bit different.

Anyway, that's not the end of the evolution of circumcision, not by a long shot. The visible results of circumcision made jews 'hideous' by greek standards, and the greeks liked to do their business in the public baths, nude. Now the old style circumcision was 'just a snip at the tip' and didn't actually remove all the foreskin, just whatever was 'excess' hanging past the tip. So enterprising jews started stretching what they had left, altering their appearance enough to get away with going into the baths.
And the rabbis pitched a fit. Because they hated assimilation, then as now. So they changed circumcision. Instead of just clipping the tip, they started tearing the lower parts (not even separated yet as an 8 day old) off and removing every last bit of foreskin. That'll stop assimilation!
Unfortunately, it's this latter, extreme form of circumcision which was then picked up and popularized by British doctors as a way for Christian children to be immunized against the scourge of masturbation, so it's what is practiced in hospitals worldwide to this day.
The older, original form of circumcision probably didn't do much damage, as long as infection was avoided.

Anons, what does it make me if my parents didn't believe in circumcision, but reluctantly had me circumcised at 18 months or so because of skin adhesions or something causing frequent painful UTI's or something like that.
