I work in oil&gas and go to refineries to do engineering crap so I've been to the Chevron refinery in Cape Town and the Sasol refinery in Sasolburg.
Cape Town is beautiful if you stay in the right places. My hotel was in Century City. The drive to the plant would get pretty scary after only about 5 miles from the hotel. Trash everywhere, """""people""""" just walking around and blocking the street. Buses that are actually just vans that swerve in and out of traffic almost killing us. Table mountain was beautiful though.
Sasolburg is south of Joberg. I only saw Joberg from the airport side so I didn't see much of the city. Sasolburg is pretty scary. Luckily we stayed in Vanderbijlpark which wasn't too bad. My coworker wanted to buy some stupid souvenir so we ventured around Sasolburg looking for one. HOLY SHIT. I always kept my hand on my knife in my pocket and was ready to use it. Literally hundreds of """""people""""" just sitting on the sidewalk watching us. Legit scared for my life.
Literally electric fences EVERYWHERE. and they are needed. It was a good life experience but I just got a new job and hopefully never have to go back. I felt safer in Kuwait for Christ's sake. Please stay safe ZARbros
