I have visited Bulgaria many times and have several Bulgarian friends there in different cities. I'll be there for an extended holiday at the end of May.
The good:
- A lot of Bulgarian women are lovely and traditional and spend a fair bit of time maintaining their health and appearance. Provided she's not psycho, Bulgarian women can be an excellent girlfriend, wife, and mother.
- A lot of Bulgarian people are fit. Partly because they work hard (more on that below) and also because they eat healthier & they don't eat as much junk food. They also walk a lot.
- A lot of Bulgarian people are very proud of their country and are extremely hospitable.
- The land itself is diverse and agriculturally rich, so food is fresh, affordable, and delicious. Seriously! Outrageous fruits (the cucumbers, tomatoes, and peppers are the BEST), great vegetables, meats, cheeses, wines, and the rakia is a delight.
- Bulgarian beer. Czechs and Germans set up breweries in the late 19th century, the the lagers and pilsners are top quality and very affordable, and perfect on a hot day.
- Very good value for money/exchange rate for most Westerners.
- Plovdiv. A beautiful city with lovely people.
- The Black Sea. Although it's much more...Las Vegas these days, there are still some parts away from the larger resorts that are enjoyable. More below.
- Hiking in the mountains in the summer. It's like the alps but much more affordable and less crowded.

The bad:
Bulgaria has never really recovered since 1989 and the fall of communism. At that time, there really was nearly 0% unemployment. Housing, education, and medical care was good and provided by the State, crime was low, tourism was high, the exports of Bulgaria (particularly agricultural) were consumed throughout the Eastern Bloc and the Soviet Union, and the overwhelming majority of the Bulgarian people enjoyed a very good quality of life. Of course, this was under an authoritarian state, but say compared to East Germany or Romania, Bulgaria wasn't too bad as long as you didn't rock the boat.
Whereas these days, young educated Bulgarians (or people with money) are very likely to emigrate. And I have yet to meet a Bulgarian (even my friends who are evangelical Christians) who does not pine for the life before the fall of communism.
- Lack of social mobility. In Bulgaria, there really is no middle class. There is a small and nasty elite, and the overwhelming majority of the people struggle (often working several jobs) just to make ends meet. And it often doesn't matter whether you have good qualifications, good experience, or a lot of get-up-and-go. Unless you somehow plug into an elite social or business network (both gangster and legal), you will toil like crazy just to keep food on the table, the rent paid, and the lights on.
- Chalga, or as I call it, Balkan Chav Music.
- The Black Sea. The developers have had a field day transforming large chunks of the coast into a venue that is designed to specifically appeal to fucked up cheap loser low-lifes from all over Europe who just want to get fucked up drunk, puke everywhere, and screw a pre-op tranny and die of AIDS. Sunny Beach, I'm looking at you.
- Organised crime. As in all of the former Communist countries, the ex/former communists and gangsters pretty much own everything and bleed the country dry.
