4. Make it illegal for medical tourists to travel to other countries just to get abortions.
5. Make getting an abortion totally illegal.
At each step it doesn't seem so extreme, but each step helps achieve the next step by shifting public opinion through the shifting policies. If you just skip these steps and go right for prison sentences for women that get abortions, people react poorly.
Trump's entire campaign has been about skipping those steps and going right for the end goal. Instead of slow reforms to immigration, he jumps straight towards building The Wall and revoking citizenship for anchor babies. Instead of slow reforms to stop Islam, he goes straight for banning all Muslims from entering the country.
It's worked out well so far, so he had no reason to think it wouldn't work out this time. He was wrong, though, because those other positions don't directly effect any of his supporters. Extreme views about the out-group are much more tolerable than extreme views about the in-group; none of them are Mexicans or Muslims, after all.
Some of them are women, though, and his comments scared them. Hence, he went to far and now he's paying for it in the polls.

Trump trails Clinton by only 4-6 points in most polls. He, unlike Clinton and Sanders, is attacking the people he is running against, not the person he will be running against. Once he does so, we will start to see polls rise in his favor.
Not to mention that popular vote doesn't mean as much as gaming the electoral college, which Trump can do by winning New York and a few other typically blue states.
My most hoped for situation is Trump vs Clinton. I have very little doubt he will win that. Trump vs Bernie would be another story, as normalfags don't hate Bernie.
