Losing a war against a separatist faction is quite different, since the colonists had the same military culture, there is always an advantage to the separatists in such wars because they have experience in the imperial military and can adapt their tactics. The American navy was also the only naval force in the world that could even begin to compete with the British, and that was for the same reason, our sailors came out of the same shipping system and had the same culture. Losing an independence war to members of your own ethnic group doesn't imply weakness.
