They are simply political groups with espoused beliefs, a lot of them contradictory, and change with geography, strangely enough. The right here is not the same "right" as in Europe, if if we did compare likes with the american "left" and the UK "labor"(?).
It's much more useful and empirical to use government involvement as a metric instead. You're either authoritarian, which means you'd like more government involvement, or libertarian/anarchist if you prefer less.
