Even the term "government benefits" demonstrates the problem. It used to be the government could be there _temporarily_ to support you while you looked for a job, but it wasn't a long term commitment.
Originally people were supposed to either make a living or frankly die, kind of in a frontier way of life. Now everyone is coddled, your productivity doesn't matter and people just vote to get free shit with no real accomplishment needed.
It's like minimum wage at least in this country. Once we got a minimum wage, it wasn't designed to be a safety net. But naming it a "minimum wage" or "living wage" uses terminology to morph the idea into a need.
People need to learn how to budget.
I've seen some people get into a ridiculous amount of debt just because they see "DAT FLAT SCREEN TV" on sale, but refuse to price check or look around because they're too lazy, yet they have cellphones and other shit to look with. And then they wonder why xx% amount of people can't repay that debt.
People used to have dignity. They're all NEET now.

I absolutely love cooking, and my student minimum wage days were over long ago. It is true that good food is expensive, you get what you pay for. I spend a big chunk of my disposable income on premium foods.
But what I am saying is that it is perfectly possible to eat a healthy diet on any budget.
Sure your meat won't be organic and top quality, but you will most likely be both in good health and good shape if you follow the simple rules of macro and micronutrient balance.

And classes on cooking and good food means we pay more in the beginning but with those people they'll get sick of good food fast.
