How common is it for Americans to use the setup in pic related for their bathrooms?
I went to visit some relatives in Iowa, and got to stay in their house. They lived in a pretty small city, and had to do this because of something that had to do with their city sewage treatment.
Essentially, you had to throw the used TP in a separate bin, and then also scoop the turds back up and put them in yet another separate bin.
I've experienced the TP thing in hotels in Cyprus, Spain and Greece, but the scoop thing came as a complete shock and I thought they were joking.
Could some American shed some light on this? How prevalent is it?

Yeah this setup isn't too incommon in Texas. Every other month or so the sewage system has to take a break for maintenance. The feces buckets we just pour back into the sewage tank when it's ready again. It isn't dirty or gross like some Europeans say it is, it's actually quite easy

First thing when I landed in JFK in NYC I had to use the bathroom, I was detained for 20 minutes and yelled at by airport security for flushing my poo and not depositing it in the proper poo bin by the hand dryers with the ladle. It's becoming more common, especially in newer homes. Because the dollar's been weakened it's becoming more popular for houses to be built without connecting the toilet to the sewage system in order to save a few bucks. In fact, some water companies will pay you!
But we're not animals, so we've designed special toilets that let liquids through and carry it to a specific space outside the house, but not solids. So we have to scoop the poop. It's not unhygienic, because we can wash our hands afterwards. It's a nice little system.

I mostly work with the treatment kind, but I do not see why this should be the case. If the sewage can transport shit, then it should transport toilet paper as well.
I have a Msc in wastewater and drinking water transportation and treatment. I have heard about other countries doing this, but it never made any technological or physical sense. Toilet paper can easily be removed from the wastewater with a sieve or metal grid. It's trivial to do that automatically.

If that is the case then the groundwater will likely be just as polluted with just the pisswater which had shit dipped i it. So that makes no sense. They should get a compost toilet if that is the case. Or make some artificial wetland or other way of treating it.
