It's much better to think of the indefinite integral as "a function which changes as described by the given function", and of a definite integral as "a net sum of increases of any function which changes as described by the given function over the given interval".

Well, that's interesting then. It appears that the German maths programme spends a whole lot longer on nailing down basic arithmetic and then progresses faster trough advanced arthmetic (roots/logs etc.), algebra, trig, and then ends up doing all of basic calculus anyway.
In Poland advanced arithmetic and algebra are introduced a lot earlier, but calculus is nowadays basically removed from high school altogether (unless you intend to do STEM studies and thus elect the extended math programme in high school, where you'll face basic differentiation stuff, but still no integration).
