It can be a sign of lower intelligence. I will agree that Stefan obviously has an ego problem and because of it, he saw a moment of weakness and he jumped on it. It's part of human nature and a disgusting part of it. It was needed to survive, but it's important to realize these things about yourself and to curb them when they aren't appropriate.
However, that's the attitude that Stefan has adopted, this Lion, because he feels that it is needed. He sees a battle to be won and he's right and he doesn't care about those who he has deemed his opponents feelings.
