No assumption needed. In Jan 1968 the S&P 500 was about 96.5 It peaked last year at 2130. If he invested 1.4 mil -totally tax and commision free- in 1968 it would be worth under 31 million today. Inflation is irrelevant as well. If the initial sum was 200k, he would have about 4.5 mil.

It relies on the hindsight fallacy. and also some confusion of dates.
I believe the original comparison assumed he invested the money in 1978 (this is a convenient date to assume, because it was at the very beginning of a huge stock market rally. And of course it partly relies on the current level of the stock market, which is at an all time high. However, the first index fund hadn't been started up until 1976, and there was no reason to believe at the time that there would be a huge, decades long rally in stock prices, so It would have been an insanely risky move at the time.
... but he didn't get any inheritance until 1992 or so...
plus, he had been managing his fathers companies for many years by the time Trump Sr. died, so it's not as if he didn't earn a good deal of that money in the first place.
But, yes, it's true, if Trump could have invested 1992 dollars at 1978 prices in the stock market, he could have made a killing. But if you had a time machine there would be any number of ways to make even more money than that.
