WWI is the holy grail of fucked up wars because of the conditions of battle and because the rudiments of modern weaponry had been developed while the world was largely still using medical tech and strategies from the 1800s. If you get shot in a mud-drenched, flea and rat infested trench half full of rotting bloody bodies your chance of survival is slim. Don't forget that the field hospitals of WWI were so filthy and cramped that the Spanish Flu developed.

Plus disease prevention was still in its infancy. A very large portion of casualties were from easily preventable medical issues.

Literally the first major European conflict with machine guns. European generals had no idea what to do because technology made the old rules of warfare obsolete.
So what do they do? Send wave after wave of young men on essentially suicide marches to be chopped up by machine guns. If you did make it into the enemy trench you are now faced with close quarters killing that involved whatever firearm you were lucky to have in 1915, and probably a knife or hatchet. In between this kind of shit you sit in a trench without A/C, or plumbing, often with the stench of feces and rotting bodies that were once your friends in no mans land, just waiting for the time when you walk out into no mans land again, in between constant barrages of artillery fire.
WWII was brutal but WWI was suicidal retardation.

Without the mishandling of WW1 with the Versailles treaty you would likely not have seen national socialism rise to such prominence in the years to follow. So basically what I am saying is that WW1 and WW2 are so interconnected that it is really a mistake to think about them as separate events. more like the same event with a prolonged ceasefire in the middle.
that being said it is a matter of perspective. For the Germans WW1 was probably worse. trench warfare was a never ending grind match nightmare where your life was pretty much constantly at risk of being shelled. Whereas WW2 was a much more active war. you were running around and might be killed all of a sudden. not pinned down pissing your pants.
also Germany got shafted so fucking hard at the end of WW1 it made them go to war all over again. not that after WW2 was a cakewalk. especially if you were in the east. idk.
for the allies I would assume WW2 would be considered worse. much more commitment and deaths. and America had the whole pacific war as well. which was a lot more hateful and vietnam like than the European theater.
