To get more doctors #1, you need more people going to college, not less, because they need to be taught the essential classes like you know, human anatomy, #2, you'd need to make med school affordable, because if people can't afford it, it doesn't matter how smart they are, they're not going to be able to get through it. Scholarships and grants are distributed in a way that they actually give more scholarships to students who have wealthy families (to entice wealthy families to spend more, they don't make money by giving poor students grants and scholarships, so most of their education must be funded by loans)

So now people look and see a single payer system as a more palattable way to bring the costs down compared to the alternative which is.. nobody has insurance and everyone has to pay out of pocket. If everyone had to pay out of pocket, the costs would go down because nobody could afford out of pocket expenses as they are now, and hospitals would need to compete to provide affordable care.
However even with lower costs.. when people live paycheck to paycheck, if something happens they wouldn't be able to afford a doctor.
Socialized medicine also lowers costs, because the sole source of reimbursement for hospitals doing procedures, decides "this is how much I'm going to pay for x procedure, take it or leave it" Especially when that sole payer is the government. Not a lot hospitals can do to battle it, so.. prices come down to what the government is willing to pay. That is why single payer systems cost less than our frankenstein monster of an insurance system.
