I lived there for two years until last month while I worked as a postdoc at UT. It's superior to NYC, but like any big city the cost of living far exceeds the quality of life. It was bad enough being a postdoc, but the grad students at UT only get paid $15k a year which is like half of what grad students get in the US.
Unless you make $75k+ your quality of life in Toronto will be total shit.

I live here and I can say it's not. It's the most depressing shithole in Canada that tries too hard to be NYC but is on the steady path to becoming Chicago. The only thing keeping most the crime in Scarborough and away from the core are the high rent prices.
