Who invented "debt?"
You see, before debt was commonplace, you had to work for what you owned. As such, no one could afford homes that cost 10+ years of salary. No one could afford cars that cost 3+ years of salary.
But then "credit" and "debt" came along to help out all those returning GIs from WW2. And help them it did. It let them buy things they couldn't afford. All they had to do was rack up some debt, accrue some interest, make 30 years of payments and it might all be theirs someday.
It's a scam. It's been a scam from the beginning. By hiding the true price from the buyer, you can charge any amount. Cars today can have 6 or more years worth of payments. But who cares if you're paying 5 times the already overpriced sticker for a car, you get to drive it off the lot today for a "small" monthly payment.
And so we're stuck in a system where everyone has to drown in debt just to participate in modern society. So everyone works, everyone pays, and no one prospers. And the price of everything can continue to skyrocket because it's spread out into payments so the average person cannot scrutinize what's strangling them.

This happened because Fed policy ever since was to keep interest rates low to boost the economy. Almost everything is automated today, or is some sort of service that has many substitutes or in most cases can be done by oneself thanks to the internet. This makes people's worth cheap.
The skilled labor remains skilled, and those in skilled labor professions are still alive and fairly affluent compared to the rest. The unskilled labor barely scrape by.
The combination of the promise that you will be taken care of by others with the fact that skilled labor or intelligence (books wise or people wise) isn't necessarily valued anymore (and I mean necessary to achieve affluence) is the reason why society is so shit.

I think now is a good time to enter truck driving. I work in the logistics field and I deal with truckers often.
It's easy as shit. Most truckers charge through the roof for physically touching the cargo, so they do live-unload and make the customer unload the CNTR.
Usually there's 2 hours free-time and every hour after the free time, you charge $85 in detention.
The only negative part is that trucking is still considered one of the most dangerous jobs out there due to falling asleep on the wheel, but I suspect automated driving will make the job one of the safest jobs in the world. Lots of trucks come installed with satellite TV, so you can pretty much watch TV as the truck drives itself to the destination.

There are fewer poor people in America today than ever before. Yes, tens of million of people have it hard. That's because they don't have minimal education, training, skills, experience, or credentials for jobs that will pay a decent living. The market sets prices and people are compensated based on the value of the job they do. Even with the tens of millions of people doing minimal jobs, the country is richer with more opportunity than ever before.
It's a majorly asshole-ish thing to say but the people making minimum wage just don't have the necessary credentials to valuable in the economy. That's not to say they don't have great potential. They just aren't displaying the lucrative qualities the market demands.
