The economy is going to collapse in 2017/2018 and whoever is in power is going to get the same shit that Hoover and Carter got, and that means a big loss. The Republicans are playing the long game. The point is that the Republican party knows that they would lose to Hillary if Trump ran 3rd party and split the conservative vote.
They also know, that if Trump still has more votes than Cruz when the convention comes and they deny him the nomination, Trump will definitely run 3rd party.
