My grandmother still laments the influx of blacks into her old neighborhood. She and her husband never smoked, though most of their friends did. She managed to be a stay at home mother only part of the time..
It was a great time if you had money. If you didn't have money, then there was a good chance that you wouldn't be able to reach your potential at a university, but there were still amazing jobs for the high school educated, and coverage was quite good for a long time (until perhaps the mid 80s into the 90s--not exactly sure on that point).
If there was less greed and manipulation of the market involved, social programs would have gradually increased over time to cover more of the country and more people who deserved it would've been able to go to college while limiting the number of useless students. Unfortunately, most of the jobs went to shit, and today we accept working harder for less money and less coverage, and there is less and less room for a high school educated person to make ends meet, especially if he wants a family. Due to the ease of getting loans, and diversity quotas, more and more people are shitting up the university system and it's not working as it should.
People knew a lot less about politics and history then. Getting information was a lot slower and there were fewer sources, mainly the library. If you were smart, though, and took the time to read, you could find plenty of information and talk circles around vapid housewives and male worker drones.
Sure, there was less medical knowledge and it was tougher for people who couldn't work or make enough money to realize their potential, and people were often less informed than they are now, doesn't mean it was a bad time period.
As a setup for the information age, it could've been a lot worse. It could've been India or China or somewhere like that.
Fun fact: Irish/Italian distrust still existed to an extent past the first half of the 20th century. My dad experienced some of it firsthand.

The Hippie movement was way, way overblown. I've actually been trying to figure out what life was like for blacks during segregation. While they obviously didn't have the same rights as white people, they seemed to have a higher standard of living, had social contact with whites and acted somewhat civilized.
However, it's impossible to find accurate information today, because of the obvious political bias that can only portray the segregation era as something horrible. Of course no one is going to say they had it better back then, because of the enormous political backlash that would follow.
I've had the same problem when researching slavery, trying to find information on slave owners who treated their slaves well.
It's not so much an attempt at excusing slavery and segretation, as it is trying to find out the truth and get a more balanced view of the era.
