Define "studying".
>>
>>70037449
Of course not! Studying it in a university, however, is largely a mistake unless you are both a genius and are not paying for your own education.

The only philosophy degree worth a shit is a PhD, and even that may or may not entail you working as an associate professor at some community college for $17,500 a year. Pick a different major, seriously.

it's not something the average citizen should be encouraged to do. most people don't need to study philosophy to lead happy and fulfilling lives. philosophy should only be available for study in the university as a graduate program, not something for directionless 20 something year olds to waste their parents money on.

Philosophy is women's studies tier. It's literally

>what can be?
>why?

All questions, no answers. Talk about useless.
>>
>>70037449
85% of philosophy grads who apply to law school get in. Google it.
>>
>>70037596
It's useless unless you are a genius, but since you are asking I assume you are not.

If you want to study philosophy do it because you are seeking new knowledge no one else has developed before (or if you want to refute some thought that is prevalent and has flaws), not because you like plato or some other greek dude.

I recommend you research what are today's relevant topics in this field and see if you are interested. The worst thing you could do is go to philosophy thinking that this is what smart people do. If you really want to be a philosopher you need to improve your self-criticism first.
>>
It is not a mistake if any of these are the case:
>you don't care about money
>you are planning to go to law school afterward
>you are planning to go to medical school afterward
>you are involving yourself in business, software development, advertising, design, or something else monetarily beneficial such that upon graduating you have real-world knowledge / experience
>you are going to a top 5 philosophy program, have a backup plan, and are having your education paid for

In every other case it is a mistake.

It's going to be helpful when we come to abandon ethical systems that are based on religion and tradition. As we move towards becoming a more secular society we need to open up large scale discussions about what morality is and how to apply it logically and consistently without appealing to subjectivity and opinion.

It'll be key for moving from authoritarian and statist systems to ones of freedom and liberty such as libertarianism and then later voluntarism/anarchy. Those systems are inherently more moral because they contain less violence but we need a peaceful and well educated populace for them to work long term.

I fell for this meme.

Don't waste 4 years studying something that doesn't offer any skills to get a job if you don't want to go to law school. You don't know what you'll want to do in 4 years, you can't be sure you'll stick through.

Even if it's harder and you get worse marks, just do better on the LSAT.

Seriously it's 4 fucking years in the prime of your life, don't take BS courses just to "boost" you GPA for law school.

In my opinion informal logic should be studied by everyone. Knowing how to form logical arguments and dismantle bullshit ones is highly worth the time spent. Metaphysics, Epistemology and Aesthetics I don't place too much importance on past leisure.

its something that you should take a passing interest in your spare time if you can be bothered, as a course though its as pretentious as taking an art course.

OP, ask yourself if you like doing philosophy, whether or not you get any money, social benefits, including respect from society and your peers. Ask yourself if you like the activity of philosophy. Ask if you like living that kind of life.
Then do it. Or don't. That's the question that matters.
At if you like it, you can figure out a way to make money, somehow or other, doing something or other. Who cares what. That's just money.
>>
>>70037449
They greatly improved my critical thinking skills. I wouldn't be where I am today without the classes I took.
For a career, it's a hard field to get into, but I think everyone could easily benefit from taking at few philosophy courses. It's also a good second major if you can manage that.

I have a philosophy degree and work in engineering. Most people who major in philosophy do well for themselves, but you also have to be an intelligent person to get through the program and most would have done well for themselves anyway. The students are usually the fringe of the college and are pretty great people besides the one athiest kid in my classes who made every question into a snarky remark about christians even when it was completely irrelevant.

>>
Depends on the philosopher...

Epictetus is very useful, for example. It makes you a happier person and a better person.
>>
Philosophy is something you should arrive at independently, not by having people tell you how to think.
>>
>>70037449
Useless to society? No. If you intend to develop your mind and then use your mind for the betterment of society, then it's eminently useful. Write books. Go to work in politics. Write speeches for charismatic people who need to get the word out. Go into advertising. Get a law degree and be one of the good guy lawyers. Work with young people so they don't grow up into assholes and shitheads.
>>
>>70037449

I lot of people forget that Socrates was a sculptor/stone mason just like his father was. Then he did like "workshops" with merchants for a while to learn skills like shoe-making. He then did a career of almost thirty years in the military. Then he did work as a councilman. So I mean Socrates had a pretty well rounded life. I think a degree in Philosophy isn't really what you should be interested in OP. Have a well rounded life, experience things, then study philosophy as Socrates did and I am sure it'd be more beneficial to society.

Also a Philosophy student literally told me all you do is like read someone else's shit and write a paper and you get money. That sounds like it's a scam almost. You just write thought provoking stuff that has been said and you get money. Who does that help? But if you lived as Socrates did, have a well rounded life, service your nation and home, and all these other things he did. I think if you then studies philosophy you'd maybe have more profound discoveries and ideas than what we have right now flowing into our media.

One of my colleagues write a paper concerning how Animals are people and should be treated as people. He wasn't a philosophy major, but someone he managed to pump out three hundred pages of why animals should be considered people. It was nonsense and filled with horrendous fallacies but he believed it profound and earth shaking. These are the people that are in Philosophy majors.

Tl;Dr it's only a waste if you do it completely wrong OP.
>>
>>70037449
No but humanities-liberal education in general should be restricted to the top 10-15%.

In other words, If you have to work in order to not starve you shouldn't study them

Depends what you do with the knowledge.

I could ask is studying medicine completely useless to society and people would line up to say 'No, medicine is very useful to society.'

But if after studying medicine that knowledge is wasted making ugly stupid women attractive enough to reproduce, creating a world full of ugly stupid babies, is that really a benefit to society?

Anyone who can contribute anything new to philosophy is intelligent enough to learn all the jargon themselves, and the time you spend in academia would be far better spent out in the world working and learning about the world.
