How can we name it? How do you name something that's owned by the entire planet? What language? What references? Will Trump Make the Moon Great Again?
>>
>>70029758

No one cares about our moon?
>>
>>70029758
Just as we name biological creatures in Latin, so should we name Celestial objects in Latin. It's a prominent language that's politically neutral, but nevertheless effective, and therefore will be accepted by everyone.

What specific Latin name we use can be decided by the committee.
>>
>>70029758
How about we just call it "the moon". That's what it is. It doesn't really need a special name.

Of you mean a standard international name, Luna seems to be a decent option.
>>
>>70031647
I thought it was already called Selene in astronomy
>>
Deseret
>>
>>70032014
IDK if it would be. I'm just making the point in terms of Communication. Although since the second term we use for the Moon is Lunar, it would probably have to be Luna/Lunar
>>
>>70032349
Oh yeah, I faintly remember people using Sol/Luna, but that's even worse because they're Spanish terms.
Just go greek desu.
>>
>>70032637
Spanish = Romantic Language.

I'm Gringo as fuck and I didn't make the connection that these terms are particularly Spanish. Nevertheless, it's valid feedback that Spanish speakers take it as Spanish. But I'm also pretty sure that most Non-Romantic speakers will take it as Latin. What's even more interesting, though, is that Luna may not a language-neutral term for Romantic speakers.

IDK. This is sort of my niche but it isn't my job to rename the moon.

Our moon's name is the Moon.
Our sun's name is the Sun.
Our solar system's name is the Solar System.

Anything else you may hear (luna, sol, etc) are just people using latin names to make them sound faux-scientific.
>>
call it Murica 2.0 since you guys were there first.
>>
>>70035250
Specific terms like Sol, Luna, Terra are necessary when the context includes other systems.

Also I think we pretty much own the moon, once a dude goes there and plants a flag has always been a recognized method of claiming territory.
>>
Luna

that's it's proper name anyway

fucktards
>>
>>70036095
It's not necessary, just like there is a difference between saying God vs a generic god.

And those are no more specific than just saying Sun, Moon, Earth. You're just using the latin words.

I would say that alien objects should use another dead language.
Like Ancient Greek.

But then fags will try to use Hebrew or Egyptian or something.
>>
>>70035250
Sonne, Mond and Sonnensystem are the only correct words.

Now go fuck off and die somewhere with your baby-tier bait.
>>
>>70036095
>once a dude goes there and plants a flag has always been a recognized method of claiming territory
Yes, for a little chunk of soil or a mountain or something.
You own territory on the moon, not the entire moon.

Normally I'd shit on you for this, but knowing how you guys went there uninvited and penetrated the moon without xir consent with a long hard phallic flagpole will undeniably trigger moonkins to the point of suicide I'll just let it be.

Listen up Hakim, if you want a piece of the moon you need to go up there and plant your own flag on the part you want. Until then the whole thing's ours.

just leave it as moon or maybe the moon, luna is ok though
>>
>>70036962
That's what I'm saying. People seem to have some misconception that things like sol and luna are the "real" names just because it's latin and scientific-sounding.

The name is whatever the name is in the language you're speaking.
>>
>>70037456
Sure.

But first you need to send someone into the internet and physically plant a flag there.

The advantage of luna/sol is that it's a dead language that is internationally acknowledged.
Makes things a lot less awkward if the words are not of any modern nationality.

Plus, Latin is a pretty awesome language. If we were living in a good world, we'd write Latin on the internet.
Much less misunderstandings that way, because Latin is geared towards written expression, due to its history.

Well, you see, taking possession of something can also be accomplished by storing it in your territory. Sort of like how every online communication you make today will be stored in the Utah Data Center. We own your communications, and a record of every page you visit. Does that count?
>>
>>70029758
Fuck these people. I just submitted the name "Moon" as a suggestion.

We call it the moon because that's what it is. To the human race, all other moons are merely secondary, after.

Moon is such a basal word it's not derivative at all.

Latin isn't spoken anymore.
The dead have special rights. They called dibs on celestial bodies and animals.

I was going to BTFO of you and call you a faget, but you've actually got me thinking that you may be right, and that the the moon hasn't really been properly named. This is the first time that I have ever experienced this.
>>
>>70038517
Think whatever you want. Luna is not the "true" name of the ball orbiting our planet. It is no different than saying Moon or Mond or whatever other word for moon you want.

And even so, luna is already also the name of moon (both The Moon and generic moon) in most romance languages anyway. So proclaiming Luna as the official name changes absolutely nothing in terms of ambiguity, because you still have the same (non-)issue of determining whether we're talking about the Moon vs generic moon.
>>
>>70029758
So people want to change its name from Luna to something else?
>>
The moons name is Moon.

When Planet Nine is found and some fuckwad names it something other than a Roman/Greek god, the sound you will hear is a collective REEEEEEEEEEE!

Just call other moons "natural satellites". Our natural satellite is The Moon.
>>
>>70039246
Right. There is no "correct universal" name for the Moon.

It's a non-issue though. Just like saying "a mom" vs "Mom" as a nickname for what you call your mom. Or God vs god.

There are plenty of words that have both specific and generic meanings depending on capitalization and context. There are also plenty of specific names that are still different depending on the language (ie, all the different names for Jesus, for instance)
>>
Lets just call the moon The Jews, so we can blame The Jews for women's cycles.

As if we didn't have to alienate our children further. They will now have to grow up in an homogenous, tranny loving, immigrant rape ground, and forced to love it like good little cucks.

And now when they look up at the moon, instead of seeing an ancient sphere, with an ancient and established name, instead they'll say "Look daddy, look, it's Moony McMoonface (sponsered by Mcdonalds)"

I guess it'll be a good think that our children don't think themselves special in the place of the universe, when they evetually all get massacred by rich people in post-scarcity

Lets take your example of humans. We are both humans but we have names. The same goes for moons. Titan is one of Saturn's moons. Our moon doesn't have a unique name because we use moon to refer to other natural satellites. It would be like calling you human. It's factually correct but that's not your name.
>>
>>70041117
We use Moon/moon to refer to both Earth's moon specifically and natural satellites in general.
>>
>>70042269
Moon = Earth's moon
moon = generic natural satellite

Just as this planet is called the Earth and not Terra

>>

Which is why I wrote Moon/moon.
>>
>>70029758

Earth - Gaia
Moon - Selene
Sun - Helios
