After having gone through the process recently, yes birth defects happen at a higher rate in women 35+ which is why an amnio is only covered by most insurance after you hit 35. An amnio will tell you of any genetic birth defects before hand, if you're undr 35 you get bloodwork that gives odds. Mine were 1 in 12,000. These are usually subsidized by the state to be low cost so all mothers can know what their chances are.

I'd say the risky age is 40, not looking at it from a statistical perspective, but from a personal perspective. Up until then the chances are still so very slim that you end up with a down syndrome baby that you have to be a risk nutter to be veeeeery concerned about it.
