Our economy was and is great. That wasnt the problem. Our banks lent out too much money and had no cash reserves then the US economy went tits up. Our banks were caught with no cash. They exploded. Since Europe lent our banks money and now our banks were in trouble it was everyone problem. Europe insisted that they could lend us the money but it was out national problem and not an EU collective problem. There was worry that we would protest and refuse and elect a leftist government in response to the problems. which would make things worse.
We elected a right wing government that did everything right, took the higher taxation without complaint and when the international money markets seen that they started lending to us basically for free. Which was even cheaper than the amount the EU lent to us at. Borrowing money without interest attached to it is free money. We had our free money again.
Our problem went away because our only problem was potentially a high cost of borrowing to recapitalize our banks.
