In us and australia there are large areas of undeveloped land near by metropolitan areas. Typically metro areas have higher land value. Hence a developer will buy a large piece of land and sub devide it, maybe into 30000 lots. Then the devloper builds houses on each one. It is cheaper for the builders and engineers to build essentially 30000 of the exact same house.
Generally it looks shit, feels shit to live in and the houses are of poor build quality.

they are pretty convenient tho. pic related is near where i live. You can see the dense rows of tiny 1-story houses, but also there's a major commercial street to the north and highway access to the south. It makes it really easy to get to places. Of course, you NEED to have a car.
This is how most of these dense suburbs are. They fill in spaces between a grid of commercial boulevards, with some kind of freeway exit within 5 minutes drive.

Buying into anywhere under an hour from the city thats not in a derelict suburb will set you back $500k here.
Buying into something modest closer to the city that still has a small yard can push you over 1 mil.
The great part is there's a large number of homes and apartments that are completely empty because they're owned by the Chinese who've bought up masses of our real estate and just held onto it, pushing the suburban prices up and shafting anyone under 35 who'd like to buy one.

mid sized towns are the way to go. 200,000-500,000 pop. Here in the south, housing is pretty cheap. That is, unless you want to be reasonably far away from black people, which takes a bit more cash. I bought a 2 story 2000 sqft house for 325 back in 2009. a home of the same type of location, size and quality would cost at least 2 million in just about anywhere in California.
Our neighborhood is somewhat "in the country," yet hardly 15 minutes north of town. Most of my neighbors have long private drives with gates. You cant even see most of the homes from the street. Huge acreage with each property, too.
Dont believe the hype, Euros. Housing is still rock bottom in several parts of the country. and they arent all 1 centimeter apart, either.
