I've been trying to figure out the fundamental argument behind stereotypically SJW topics (trigger warnings, microaggressions, etc.). I figured that the best place to figure this out would be from that crowd themselves, but I (predictably) was called racist and sexist when I asked, so I come to you instead.
Is it literally just MUH FEELINGS, or is there something else there? Is there a base assumption that they have that I'm not seeing?
Why, looking at it from the most rudimentary level possible, do they behave the way that they do?

It's literally the lowest form of thought. Surround yourself with people who say you're right and don't allow anyone to disagree with you. If anyone disagrees with you they're automatically ___ist so you never have to worry about it. You're always right and they're always wrong and you never have to see an oposing argument.

Here's the thing about trigger warnings - getting "triggered" is a real response; I had a fucked up accident in my city and when I cross that street I get anxiety. But here's the thing - I STILL CROSS THE FUCKING STREET and don't lose my shit when people mention cars or road tolls or whatever. Because self control and therapy and adulthood.
Here's the thing, I think the whole "trigger warning" thing came from a good place and concern for the mentally ill, abused and suffering. Unfortunately, extreme leftist idiots with a toxic combination of entitlement, shitty personality and drama have turned it into a complete joke.

To answer OP's question, the base assumption that you're not seeing is that these people believe that everyone is deeply traumatized by any small event that happens in their life. They believe that any sort of unhappiness whatsoever will send people into fucking shell shock or something.

There are a multitude of philosophical and political ideas that have been adopted and thoroughly bastardized by self-proclaimed "social-justice warriors". In my admittedly limited experience in dealing with them directly, I've found the vast majority to be ideological inconsistent, yet extremely stubborn about their views. To put it succinctly, there is a stigma against conservative thought in popular culture, and undergrad millennials are going into social sciences and liberal arts and having this bias reinforced by the academic authority.
On top of that, they're also not having their ideas challenged, leading to extremist points of view to develop out of otherwise benign and perfectly legitimate ideas. Here are a few victims...
