It definitely needs to be adjusted because of inflation of the dollar. It's unrealistic to survive independently on minimum wage unless you're living in an area with $400 rent, which is a small percentage of the country. I think it should be minimum of $10/hr, but $12 would be ideal.

Not an expert on economics, but wouldn't the price of services and housing increase to adjust to an increased minimum-wage. One of the main-reasons that housing costs are so high in the US, is because immigrants are willing to live in conditions that most Americans are not; 10 people sharing a two bedroom apartment, sharing a single room with a few friends, etc. As a result, landlords are renting out their properties at rates above market-value. Here in Arizona, apartments that used to be the equivalent of $450/month in the 1980s are now $800-$850/month. 8 spics do not mind sharing a two-bedroom apartment with each other.
Immigration is one of the biggest causes behind the shitty wages/high living costs for poor and working-class Americans. Raising the min-wage will only exacerbate things.
