My grandfather on my fathers side was stationed on the USS Utah during the Pearl Harbor attack. He was 17 years old when he signed into the navy with his parents permission. During the attack he swam to shore and hunkered down in a bunker with other survivors. After that he was on the USS Honolulu and after the war he received 5 bronze stars, a purple heart and 2 battle participation medals. Don't know what the participation medals were called. I think one was called the Pacific - Asiatic or some such. He was quoted in a local newspaper saying that the Pearl Harbor attack was "A disgraceful time."

My Grandmother(non jew) lived in Smolensk during the war it was real tough because every week they would get occupied and then liberated ,she lived where the soviets began to push back against the krauts.
My other Grandmother (from my fathers side) was in a ghetto in ukraine .Her father was transfered into a labor camp, where they fed the workers very badly, she told me that he was caught stealing bread once and got beaten.He surrvived and managed to get back to them after the war but hid from the reds because they executed people who worked for the Germans.
