My grandfather on my fathers side was stationed on the USS Utah during the Pearl Harbor attack. He was 17 years old when he signed into the navy with his parents permission. During the attack he swam to shore and hunkered down in a bunker with other survivors. After that he was on the USS Honolulu and after the war he received 5 bronze stars, a purple heart and 2 battle participation medals. Don't know what the participation medals were called. I think one was called the Pacific - Asiatic or some such. He was quoted in a local newspaper saying that the Pearl Harbor attack was "A disgraceful time."

My grandfather fought against the Japanese. He could have killed a man but didn't.
A Japanese soldier surrendered to my grandpa and while doing so he made a gun motion at his own head, like he wanted my grandpa to shoot him. Apparently the Japanese in the war would often choose dying over surrendering. Instead my grandpa took him as a prisoner without killing him. My grandpa wasn't a violent person, dunno why he even joined that stupid war. He should've stayed out of it IMO.
He was a cool guy. Died a couple years ago.
