America is still a young nation, barely over 200 years old. So is it really that shocking to learn our cuisine is an amalgamation of different cuisines from other cultures? By the time America was founded, much of pre-existing cuisine had already been invented and refined. By contrast, America has had very little time in the grand scale to invent and perfect many dishes that are purely American in origin.

Exclusively New World foods include: corn, potatoes, peppers, peanuts, sunflowers, yams, avocados, blueberries, cranberry, strawberry, tomato, squash, lots of beans, turkey, pecans, chicle (gum), cocoa (chocolate), maple syrup, vanilla, and more.

As far as types of food, you have: BBQ (Carolina, Kansas City, Texas, Memphis) which is a fusion of Mexican, American, and Native foods, Soul food (fusion of West African and American food), Creole/Cajun (fusion of French, Spanish, and American), New England food (unique seafood in the Northeast), etc.
There are plenty of great American foods with great American ingredients.
